Karangahake Gorge
These are pictures from our hike in the Karangahake Gorge, which is just outside Paeroa. For thoughts on Paeroa, just go to Travis' blog. :) We hiked for about three hours in this area, which was very pretty, but not very peaceful because there is a road that follows the river, and they were doing construction on it. This area used to be a very busy place, because there was a goldrush. After all the gold was mined out of the hills, it kind of died, and there is not much there anymore. We started going over the bridge and through this old railway tunnel. If you look closely, you can see a little light at the end of the tunnel, and that is where we got out. I got a little freaked out in the tunnel becuase it was really hard to see and there were little side passages that I kept expecting people to jump out of. But of course, no one did. I think it took at least 15 minutes to walk through the tunnel. I don't really care to do that again any time soon. On the rest of the journey, we saw the river, climbed on rocks, saw a little waterfall, and Travis attempted to conquer his fear of heights.

Wow! I'm totally impressed that you walked through that tunnel. I don't think i could have done it. It's all small and dark and claustrophobic looking.
Is that Travis up there on the top of that bridge?
Actually, it's me on the bridge, but he walked over it as well!
